Scientific Sessions - IOMC 2027

Weight Stigma, Discrimination and Obesity Care

Stigma and discrimination may have critical effects on people with obesity because of its influence on their healthcare experience, mental state, societal participation, and their willingness to undergo treatment. The International Obesity and Metabolism Conference will become an opportunity to study the problem of stigma in healthcare, workplace, educational environment, media, and society in general in a scientific way.

In the course of this session, the issues of obesity-related discrimination, implicit biases, communicational skills, patients' experiences, health services accessibility, and the possible impact of stigmatizing attitudes on behavior of patients and their willingness to get medical assistance will be discussed. It will be discussed what an appropriate language and respectful and patient-oriented approach should look like in the case of obesity.
Moreover, there will be highlighted scientific ways to create mo

re comfortable healthcare settings for people with obesity. Healthcare providers, scientists, psychologists, public policy makers, and patient advocates will get the chance to share their opinions regarding reducing stigma without violating scientifically based strategies of prevention and treatment of obesity.
